2020 Week 8 Thursday Night Pick

Jeremey Chinn just won defensive player of the month

Italicized for win

Bolded for spread

Atlanta Falcons (+1.5) @ Carolina Panthers - The Falcons are playing better recently since the firing of Dan O'Quinn.  Raheem Morris has at least righted their defense although they did manage to blow another game in typical Falcons fashion scoring a TD too early and letting Stafford drive down the field.  Even then, the Falcons had 97% chance to win with 30 seconds left.

Can the Falcons recover quickly enough against a Panthers team that's playing better.  The Falcons this time will have Julio Jones back.  That being said, the Panthers have yet to lose a team that is below .500.    While the Falcons lose 23-16 earlier this season in a game that didn't feel that close, Julio Jones didn't play.  Results have not favored the home team so far in the CoVid season.

Sunday

Dallas Cowboys (-1) @ Washington Football Team -  Dallas is coming off a terrible performance Monday Night against the Cardinals 38-10; granted Washington also lost to the Cardinals 30-15 that didn't feel much closer.  Washington defense did shut out the Giants in the 2nd half- granted that didn't stop Kyle Allen losing his 9th game in a row as a starter.  Perhaps people may say the loser should fire their head coach but frankly these teams may just be considered rebuilding teams for any imminent action to follow.  I suspect Andy Dalton will bounce back and Ezekiel Elliot could still have a good game despite Dallas's offensive line injuries and Washington's defensive front.  Dallas should have plenty of opportunities to exploit Washington's weak secondary but of course they have to give Dalton enough time.

Buffalo Bills (-10) (LOCK) @ New York Jets - The Bills are coming off two losses against two division leaders.  With Jamison Crowder out, it is going to be tough for the Jets to put up points with Joe Flaco and Frank Gore starting.

Carolina Panthers (+7)(LOCK) @ New Orleans Saints - The Saints are going to be without Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.  Carolina is coming off a disappointing lose to the Bears where DJ Moore dropped the ball in the end zone.  Terry Bridgewater has a chance to stick it against his former team.  Kamara could still have a big day on the ground and the Saints always do seem to do enough at the end of games to pull them out.

Los Angeles Chargers @ Jacksonville Jaguars (+7.5) - The Chargers are coming off a bye which could favor them against the Jaguars who have lost 5 straight games after winning their opening game.  The Chargers have had one of the toughest schedules, losing 4 games t above average teams.  While there is talk of benching Minshew, the Jaguars offense still has potential to play better as DJ Chark gets re-integrated back into the lineup

Green Bay Packers @ Houston Texans (+3) - The Packers are coming off a big blow out loss while the Texans lost a relatively close game to the Titans in overtime.  While the Texans rush defense is horrendous, the Packers are likely to be without lead rusher Aaron Jones which could lead to problems for the Packers in the redzone.

Cleveland Browns (-3)(LOCK) @ Cincinnati Bengals - The Browns and Bengals had a surprisingly close Thursday Night game where Beckham broke out.  Burrows threw over 60 times and the Bengals only covered after a TD catch at the end of regulation.  While the Bengals are playing well offensively, they will be without Joe Mixon although Giovanni Bernard has had effective games.  Tee Higgins has been averaging 20% of the targets for Burrows since week 5.  The Bengals defense is still well below average.

Pittsburgh Steelers  @ Tennessee Titans (-1.5) - Derrick Henry had a great game coming off the Titans quarantine and looks to exploit a pretty stout Steelers defense who going to be without their best defensive player Devin Bush.  Claypool already has 2 rushing touchdowns this season.

Detroit Lions @ Atlanta Falcons (-1) - These are two bad defenses although perhaps the Falcons may receive a boost from promoting Raheem Morris to head coach.  The Lions looked sharp last week against the Jaguars- Kenny Golladay could have a big game and DeAndre Swift was effective last week scoring 4 touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers @ New England Patriots (-2.5) - Jimmy G goes against his former team while this is a must win game for the Patriots.  The 49ers defense looks better with Mosley back.  The 49ers running game still appears to be a mess without Mostert.

Kansas City Chiefs (-7) @ Denver Broncos - The Broncos are coming off a nice win against the Pats.  Patrick Mahomes has never lost to the Broncos.  This could be a game where the Broncos struggle to score; Tim Patrick looks for his 3rd straight 100+ yard receiving game.

Tampa Buccaneers (-4) @ Las Vegas Raiders -  This could be a game where Tampa's defensive front controls the game although the Raiders have looked sharp with wins against the Saints and Chiefs.

Seattle Seahawks (-3.5) @ Arizona Cardinals - This should be a very high scoring game although  Arizona's defense played much better against the Cowboys compared to games earlier in the season against the Panthers and the Lions.  Seattle is still coming off a bye week as their offensive is still very explosive.

Monday

Chicago Bears(+6)(LOCK)  @ Los Angeles Rams - The Bears look good defensively with good wins against the Bucs and Panthers.  Look for the Rams to bounce back after a bad loss to the 49ers - although perhaps the Rams are a bit overrated here since there only wins are all against the NFC East this season.  Nick Foles is already 2-0 against the Rams since he was a starting quarterback although he hasn't exactly looked great.  Still, the Bears defense could give the Rams fits.

Carson Wentz PFF Grade improved from 47.3(31st)
in Weeks 1-3 to 76.6 (9th( in Weeks 4-6
🔹

New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles (-5) - This is another lowly matchup in the NFC East where the 2-4 Cowboys lead the division.  The Giants are coming off a win although it came against the Washington Football Team.  Granted Washington did beat the Eagles earlier this season, although the Eagles right now have a better record- the difference being a tie between Cincinnati Bengals.  Wentz looks to improve his record against the Giants- he lost his first game against them but has now won 6 in a row.  Boston Scott only had 11 touches when he was starter in Week 1; look for him to get more involved.

Sunday

Kansas City Chiefs (-4.5) @ Buffalo Bills -  Kansas City really struggled against the Raiders last week and may have their works cut out against the Bills.  Luckily for the Chiefs, the Bills are coming in from a shorter week than normal but they also look to rebound from a loss.  Le'Veon Bell goes from the worst team in football to the best team in football but will not be able to play this week.

Houston Texans (+4.5) @ Tennessee Titans  -  The Houston Texans appear to have re-activated Brandin Cooks who is coming off his best game of the season. The Titans are coming off a big win against the Bills but this game may be closer due to coming off a short week against a division rival.

Cleveland Browns (+3.5) @ Pittsburgh Steelers - Claypool had 4 touchdowns last week against the Eagles in one of the most bizarre covers of the season.  The Browns are also playing well in what could be the game of the week.  Mayfield's accuracy issues could become problematic although the Browns have a better running game and perhaps their defense could pressure Big Ben to make this a closer game.

Baltimore Ravens (-7.5) @ Philadelphia Eagles - Instead of Terrell Owens celebration imitating Ray Lewis celebrating a TD, the Eagles are envisioning Fulgham to repeat his 152 yard week.  That being said, the Ravens defense could give the Eagles trouble.

Washington Football Team @ New York Giants (-2.5)(LOCK) - Washington went to Alex Smith who had 36 yards passing but also allowed 6 sacks, who will go back to Kyle Allen who has lost his last 8 games he started.   The Giants last win with Daniel Jones came against the Washington Football Team.  Brandon Scherff comes back which could bolster Washington's offensive line.

Atlanta Falcons (+4) @ Minnesota Vikings - The Falcons could get a bounce similar to the Texansby  firing head coach Bill O'Brien last week.  Of course, they would probably get a bigger boost offensively if Julio Jones is fully healthy.  Alexander Matison can fill in the void for Dalvin Cook and Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson could have big weeks against a very poor Falcon's secondary.

Detroit Lions (-3) @ Jacksonville Jaguars - Detroit is coming off a bye and looks to take advantage of a Jacksonville defense that has struggled all season.  The Lions have jumped out to big leads in 3 of their losses against the Bears, Packers, and Saints.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Indianapolis Colts (-7.5) - The Colts struggled last week against the Browns but look to get back on track against a hapless Bengals teams.  The Bengals could bounce back from their anemic numbers last week against the Ravens where they were essentially shut out.  Instead of going for it on 4th and 2 with 50 seconds to go down 27-0, the Bengals inexplicably settled for a field goal.  Joe Mixon looked ordinary against a Ravens defense and the Colts defense could be an equally tough test.

Chicago Bears @ Carolina Panthers (-1) (LOCK) - The Panthers under Matt Rhule appear to be a very underrated team although face a pass front in the Bears did make Tom Brady forget what down it was at the end of the game.   Mike Davis gets a chance to get revenge on his former team.

New York Jets (+9.5) @ Miami Dolphins - Is it safe to believe in the Dolphins with Fitzmagic; this is usually the time where he comes crashing down to earth. That being said, it is another revenge game against the Jets which is not unusual for Fitzpatrick who has played for every team in the division.  The Jets offense looks terrible with Flacco although it is still hard to believe the Dolphins are a team to reckoned with.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos(+7.5) -  Both teams return their starting quarterbacks.  Melvin Gordon is out for the Broncos but perhaps the Broncos passing attack can back on track with Lock back.

Green Bay Packers (-1)(LOCK) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers - This could be a very exciting game as both team have at least 10 days to prepare for this one.  Aaron Rodgers with Davante Adams could be a tough for the Bucs to slow down.  The Bucs defense didn't appear to cover the slot that well.  Chris Godwin is expected to return but the Packers defense has been more impressive especially when they slowed the Saints earlier this season.

Los Angeles Rams (-3)(LOCK) @ San Francisco 49ers -  The Rams appear to be plaing much better than their opponent the 49ers that benched Jimmy Garrapolo last week.  Aaron Donald could wreak havoc and the 49ers dfense could continue to struggle without Sherman in the secondary.

Monday

Arizona Cardinals (-1) @ Dallas Cowboys - The Andy Dalton era begins in Dallas.  These are two similar defenses where Ezekiel Elliot will mash the cardinals run defense and Kyler Murry will play well against the Cowboys defense.

2020 Week 5 NFL Picks

Haskins moved from starter to 3rd string
and now Washington is expected to trade him
according to The Team 980

Italicized for win

Bolded for spread

Sunday

Los Angeles Rams (-7.5) @ Washington Football Team  - This will be an interesting test for Washington against Sean McVay, the former offensive coordinator.  The Rams have had trouble matching up with the Washington in the past although their last matchup was 3 seasons ago.  The roadmap for Washington to make this competitive is to slow down the Rams attack which could be helped by the return of Chase Young.  Kyle Allen makes his debut for the Football Team and looks to get Antonio Gibson more involved as a pass catching back.  The Panthers did lose their last 8 games with Allen as a starting quarterback including a loss to Haskins and Washington last season.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Pittsburgh Steelers (-7) - Pittsburgh Steelers defense can get pressure and the Eagles offensive line has struggled due to injuries.  Miles Sanders could have his work cut out since the Steelers only rush 2.3 yards per game.  The Eagles best shot at keeping this competitive is to get pressure to Roethlisberger- that being said even at 38, Big Ben should be better than Nick Mullens was last week.

Arizona Cardinals (-7) @ New York Jets - Joe Flacco takes over which is a reason why this spread is so big.  LeVeon Bell is coming back so the Jets could be slightly better against a Cardinals defense that struggled immensely last week.  It will be interesting to see if the Cardinals will rely more upon Kenyan Drake this season or simply move to Chase Edmonds.

Las Vegas Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs (-11.5) - The Raiders had a surprising win against the Saints and have trended downwards since.  Carr has looked shaky in terms of his progression.  The Chiefs did struggled the last time they faced a division rival although one has to imagine they won't take the Raiders as lightly as the Chargers.

Jacksonville Jaguars (+6) @ Houston Texans  - Jacksonville has lost 4 straight against the Texans.  Vegas may be counting on a boost from the Texans firing Bill O'Brien.   These are two bad defenses so expect a high scoring game.  Jay Gruden plans on getting James Robinson more involved.

Cincinnati Bengals (+11.5) @ Baltimore Ravens - The Bengals did play extraordinarily well last week in a win against the Jaguars where Joe Mixon scored 3 touchdowns.  Lamar Jackson hasn't been as sharp lately although that has still lead to three victories by 14 or more points.  Joe Burrow has done enough to keep games close especially as the Bengals air it out a lot.

Carolina Panthers (+2.5) @ Atlanta Falcons - Atlanta's defense has been terrible and the Panthers are coming off a winning streak.  Without Julio Jones, the Panthers could sneak out a win.

Miami Dolphins (+8.5) @ San Francisco 49ers  - Mostert may be coming back which could give them the edge.  Fitzpatrick did enough to keep it competitive with the Seahawks although one would think that the 49ers' defense could make things tough

New York Giants (+9.5) (LOCK) @ Dallas Cowboys -   Daniel Jones only has 2 touchdowns this season but could have a better week especially given how tough the Giants schedule was to start the season and how poor the Cowboys defense has played lately.

Indianapolis Colts @ Cleveland Browns (+1) - The Colts have a great defense so it could be tougher sledding for the Browns offense without Chubb.  That being said, it will be interesting to see if Phillip Rivers can get it going against a pretty good Browns defense.

Minnesota Vikings (+7) @ Seattle Seahawks - Justin Jefferson is looking for another 100 yard receiving yard game.  While Kirk Cousins has not been stellar in prime time, the Seahawks defense does have a lot of holes although they played pretty well against the Dolphins last week.

Monday

Los Angeles Chargers @ New Orleans Saints (-7.5) - There have been several injuries to the Chargers defense and Drew Brees has picked it up after a very poor showing against the Raiders.

Tuesday

Buffalo Bills (-7.5) @ Tennessee Titans  -  The Titans are going to be without a lot of their players due to the Corona virus and have not been able to practice together although they are certainly more well rested than the Bills.  The fact that the Titans could be without several of their key defenders could make it easier for the Bills who also have had longer to prepare.

Thursday

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3.5) (LOCK) @ Chicago Bears -   The Bears have not given up a touchdown to a receiver this season.  Tom Brady in the meantime threw for 5 touchdowns against a fairly strong Chargers defense that contained Patrick Mahomes earlier this season.  While it is possible that Brady could regress to where he was during his week 1 performance against the Saints, the Bucs defense under Bruce Arians could presents problems for the Bears rushing game who has to heavily rely upon David Montgomery with the injury to Tarik Cohen.  The Bears could use a big performance from Anthony Miller from the slot who had two touchdowns against the Falcons but struggled last week against the Colts.  Nick Foles is now 0-5 in his last five starts although he did have a come from behind victory in relief against the Colts.

2020 Week 4 NFL Picks

The Washington Football Team surprised Ron Rivera with
his own corners of fans including his dogs

Italicized for win

Bolded for spread

Sunday

Baltimore Ravens (-14)(LOCK) @ Washington Football Team - Washington's defense has struggle against the run this season meaning Ingram and Dobbins could have big games along with Lamar Jackson.  The Ravens are angry coming off blowout loss and look to beat the Football Team for the first time since 2008.  Haskins could get benched if he struggles again which could improve Washington's ability to be competitive.

Los Angeles Chargers (+7) @ Tampa Buccaneers -  With Chris Godwin and Leonard Fournette out, perhaps the Chargers can do enough to keep it close.  That being said, it could be rough for the Chargers offensively especially since the Bucs are strong against the run.

Seattle Seahawks (-4.5) @ Miami Dolphins - This could be a high scoring game. The Seahawks have struggled defending the pass, while the Dolphins have been successful airing it out.  Fitzpatrick usually is not consistent although he has had more time to prepare for this game.

Minnesota Vikings (+3.5) @ Houston Texans -  Both the Texans and the Vikings have had tough schedules as both teams combined opponents so far are 8-1. DeShaun Watson is certainly a better quarterback that Cousins and the Texans do have a stronger defense.  That being said, the Vikings do have a better running game with Dalvin Cook and better pass catching targets with Thielen and Jefferson.  This is another game where the Texans miss DeAndre Hopkins.

New Orleans Saints @ Detroit Lions (+3) - The Lions should compete in this one with a healthy Kelly Golladay while the Saints still may need to get it going.  Without Michael Thomas, the Saints have not been as explosive although Kamara is more than capable to makeup for the limitations of Drew Brees.

Cleveland Browns @ Dallas Cowboys (-3.5) - The Browns actually did not play that well against Washington and were bailed out a bit when Haskins stared down receivers leading to interceptions.    The Cowboys spread out receivers.  Beckham could have a big week against a weak Cowboys secondary although Mayfield has not played as well Matt Ryan or Russell Wilson this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars (+1.5) @ Cincinnati Bengals - Joe Burrow and Gardner Minshew battle in what should be a battle of two below average defenses.  DJ Chark does improve the Jaguars offense dramatically.

Indianapolis Colts (-3.5) @ Chicago Bears - Nick Foles came in and did lead the Bears to comeback victory.  He should target the slot receive Anthony Miller.  That being said, the Colts could exploit Foles weaknesses who did struggle with the Jaguars last season.

Arizona Cardinals (-3)(LOCK) @ Carolina Panthers -  DeAndre Hopkins is likely to suit up in this one. Kenyan Drake could improve his offensive game against a below average Panthers run defense.  DJ Moore has struggled this season for the Panthers who will likely be covered by Patrick Peterson.

New York Giants @ Los Angeles Rams (-13.5)(LOCK) - Rams coming off a loss where they actually overcame a 28-3 deficit. Henderson ran fairly well against a strong Bills defense and that trend should continue against a Giants team that has struggled to defend the running game all season.

Buffalo Bills (-3)(LOCK) @ Las Vegas Raiders -  Singletary could have a big week if Zach Moss doesn't play.  The Raiders defense was terrible last week against the Patriots.

Philadelphia Eagles (+9) @ San Francisco 49ers-  The NFC West is clearly the superior division with every team above .500 while every team below .500 in the NFC East.  That being said, the Eagles have a roadmap to make this game competitive against a 49ers team that is dealing with a ton of injuries.

Monday

Atlanta Falcons (+7) @ Green Bay Packers  -  With Adams and Lazard out, the Falcons have an opportunity to keep this game close especially with the likely return of Julio Jones to the lineup.

New England Patriots (+11) @ Kansas City Chiefs -  Assuming this game still happens, the Chiefs should clearly have an advantage if Cam Newton is not playing.  The Patriots could draw up a good defensive scheme to slow down Patrick Mahomes but even then, it likely will not be enough for a Chiefs team that is motivated to clinch a first week bye in the playoffs.
